During dry summer months, the littered pine needles spread forest fires and destroy the entire forest area in the hills of Himalayan region and the ecosystem services around it, which is the only source of income for the poor in the hills . The destruction caused by the pine needles could be avoided by harnessing the energy content in the biomass into electricity and other by-products.
ESF is partnering with experts in Uttarakhand to focus on the deployment of one 25KW capacity powerplant based on pine needles as feed. One such plant will provide livelihood to over 60 families in the remotest areas of Himalayan region round the year.
